This striking Swedish writing desk dates from the late 1930s to 1940s and reflects the Functionalist design language that emerged in Scandinavia during the interwar period, influenced by the wider European modernist movement. The desk combines a black-painted wooden structure with a distinctive tubular chromed-steel frame and four drawers, all constructed with carefully executed dovetail joints. This combination of traditional cabinetmaking and modern industrial materials is characteristic of the transition towards Swedish Functionalism, or Funkis, which gained prominence following the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930.
The desk has been preserved in its original, unrestored condition, retaining numerous marks and traces of use that have developed into an attractive and authentic patina. A loose writing mat in high-quality black saddle leather is included, providing a clean and practical working surface while leaving the original desktop untouched and in its original condition.
